Intact amazonas rainforest in Surinam (Courtesy: MPI of chemistry, Mainz, Germany)

Rainforests are the most important factor for the world climate. This has been known all along since several decades. And they are extremely endangered by human activities as well. But now a new and surprising finding has been done by scientists from the Max-Planck-Institute of chemistry, Mainz, Germany. The results which recently have been published in "nature" clearly show that intact tropical rainforests can very effectively cleans up the surrounding athmoshere from pollution. The scientists measured in a widely unpopulated area of Surinam (South America)  - with no anthropogenic pollution  - the air and calculated with complex computer programs the chemical reactions occuring in the athmosphere above the rainforests.

Breast cancer is still one of the most dangerous and deadly cancer types for women. It is a malignant tumor of the mammary glands of women. Around half a million women died in 2007 from breast cancer world wide according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). In Germany with 25% it is among women the most frequent cancer type. But also men can sicken from breast cancer in rare cases.

The Society for Experimental Biology hold its Annual Main Meeting from the 6th of July to the 10th of July in Marseille, France. The meeting has 4 main topic sessions. 1) Animal, which among others include sessions on biomechanics, predator/prey interactions and insect homeostatis. 2) Cell, which among others include sessions on circadian clocks and climate change: from genes to ecosystem. 3) Plant, whicng include sessions on ubiquitination, green products and developments in plant biology. 4) education, which include sessions on science communication, a young scientist event and a debate on bioenergy.

There is, furthermore, a cross sectional session on systems biology with an accompanying workshop. Deadline for abstracts is on the 31st of March 2008.
