The fruit fly belongs together with other flies, mosquito and crane flies the order Diptera. Fruit flies are a cosmopolitan family with more than 3000 species. The best known and most used fruit fly in biology has the Latin name Drosophila melanogaster. The adult fruit fly is around 3-4 mm long and weighs 1-2 mg. The adults are attracted to fermenting fruits and vegetables, where they lay their eggs. The maggots live in this for around a week before they pupate and after a few more days become the new generation of fruit flies.
