Also known as dead reckoning. Animals typically use path integration to return to a nest site after a foraging trip. The animals remembers the the movement and angular position of the outward journey (by using proprioceptors - internal sensors telling the animal about heading and position fo various limbs etc) and can from that ‘calculate’ a direct return vector.
