Microscopic parasites which need a host to replicate and express its genetic material. A virus organism consist of a genome (DNA or RNA strands) enclosed within a protein coat and in enveloped virus also protected by a further lipid/glycoprotein coat. Viruses cause disease in both man, animals and plants. Viruses attacking bacteria are called bacteriophages.
