The news was striking: scientists analyzed Neandertal genome and
compared it to that of modern human populations. Together with an
international research team, researchers at the Max Planck Institute
for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig present an initial draft of
the genome sequence of the Neandertal, a human form which died out some
30.000 years ago. Initial analyses of four billion base pairs of
Neandertal DNA indicate that Neandertals left their mark in the genomes
of some modern humans. Our ancestors and Neandertals had sex together.
Amazingly only humans from non-Africans show some Neandertal genome.

A maple seed with the heavy nut at the base and the wing shaped seed at the top. Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons (by user Kobako). A new study on the aerodynamics of wind dispersed maple seeds show that these seeds descend slower, and thereby disperse wider, by attaching a vortex of air, which generates increased lift. A very similar mechanism is known from insects, where it helps generate the necessary flight forces.
Maple, like many other trees, relies on wind to disperse its seeds. To aid the dispersal the maple seeds have evolved a host of morphological adaptations. The heavy nut is at the base of the insect wing shaped seed and this arrangement causes the seed to rotate while falling towards the ground.

Modern europeans stem from a very small founder population which some 50.000 years ago consisted of just a small clan which than in the following ten thousands of years developed into what we know today as european peoples. This finding is indeed not new and has been proved by numerous genetic studies on haplotypes which are a clear genealogical measurement of where and when people came to which place.
