Next year from the 27th to the 30th of April, Granada in Spain will be hosting a conference, which aims to shed more light on the risks and counter-measures, which can be taken against catastrophic asteroid impacts on our planet.
At present, there are about 900 asteroids and comets that are designated Potentially Hazardous Objects (PHOs), objects that could eventually threaten Earth. One of them, Apophis, will be particular in focus at the conference, since there is a 1/45,000 risk of it hitting Earth in 2036.
Other topics include
Detecting and tracking asteroids and comets that might be hazardous to our planet,
Characteristics of these objects.
Deflecting a threatening object should one be detected,
The nature of impact disasters, and
Political, legal and policy issues that must be considered as part of an overall mitigation strategy.
