Fat Schorsch - advertisement for a german pub (1904) German diabetes doctors meet in Berlin from 20-23 may 2009. Topics include talks about decreasing span of life due to overweight. Adiposity (abnormal overweight) has increased dramatically during the last 20 years. With a body mass index of 30 ore more a person is considered obese.
More than 20% of german men and women are concerned. Too much sugar and fat containing food is the main reason of overweight. It can lead to Diabetes Type II, heart diseases, stroke, different cancer types and high blood pressure. All these disease are the most common causes of death in the industrialized nations. Hence the span of life (which was constantly on the rise since world war II) is for the first time since decades decreasing again.
"We are challenged to develop new strategies to deal with the "epidemic" growth of adiposity", emphasizes Prof. Dr. med. Matthias Buehler, assistant medical director of the medical hospital, University of Leipzig, Germany. Especially the alarming increase of adiposity in children and teenager needs quick answers to avoid longterm consequences. These and other topics are discussed in Leipzig when the German Diabetes-Society meets.
Of course everyone can start to reduce overweight by simply working out and reducing unhealthy stuff like fast food, sweets, beer (Germans favourite drink) crisps and too much fatty meat.
